So you want to play flute. Now what?
Music has the power to be the most rewarding part of a students life. Therefore, it matters greatly with whom they study.
Studying music has proven to equip both children and young adults, students of all ages, with the tools necessary for excelling in life: discipline, focus, perseverance, confidence, and self-esteem. As such, having a teacher that develops and coaches these skills while also nurturing the artistic and creative growth of the young musician is absolutely essential. It is my belief and practice that all students need a place to explore, create, challenge, and discover, and for me, as a child that space was the practice room and my weekly flute lessons. Now as a teacher and professional musician I consider it my privilege to do the same for young flutists today.
Flute Lessons

I teach out of my home studio, located conveniently in Rice Village, steps from Rice University right in the heart of Houston, TX.
Private lessons are designed to take place weekly and in person, though I am equipped to teach lessons online on a case-by-case basis should the need arise.
Flute lessons for beginner and early intermediate players are 30 minutes long, and for the developing intermediate flutist and the advanced student lessons will be one hour.

Your time in these lessons will focus on stimulating your musical, technical and emotional growth as a flutist. Together we will establish your focus for each semester and will appropriate necessary scales, etudes, tone development studies, and repertoire.
Lessons are meant to be enjoyable for both teacher and student. The primary goal is for great music to be created and enjoyed. As such, please be aware that whatever preparation you put forth will be the benefit you reap by the end of our time together.
Each week, I leave my students with a practice plan/assignments to complete, and progress will be gaged at each lesson. It will be impossible to gage and/or make progress as an instrumentalist without putting in the amount of practice time that is necessary to complete the daily and weekly assignments. As such, please consider the implied time commitment required when taking private flute lessons.

Flute lessons will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable time. I do my best to give ample notice if I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson (ideally at least two weeks). In the case of an emergency, I will contact you directly as soon as possible and we will decide in each case if we will forgo the lesson or reschedule it.
I require 24 hours notice if you need to cancel a lesson and we can decide in each case if it is most appropriate to forgo or reschedule the lesson.
In the case of a last minute cancellation, with less than 24 hours notice, rescheduling will be decided at my discretion. Be advised: not finishing homework, forgetting, or not being prepared are not acceptable last minute cancellation reasons--lack of sufficient preparation will be decided, again, at my discretion.
In an emergency situation, I am prepared to be flexible.
Payment in full for the lessons of a given month is due at the first lesson of that month.
I expect all students to commit to regular flute lessons for the duration of the school calendar year (September-May). Teaching private lessons is something I take seriously and it is a commitment to consistent work on both sides and this ensures that both teacher and student are committed to the highest level.
About me.
My flute education
I began playing the flute in 7th grade band in Los Angeles, CA. From there I continued playing in high school band, region band, and the California all state band, as well as youth orchestras all across Southern California until I graduated high school and moved to New York City to begin my Bachelors degree at The Juilliard School. After graduation I moved to Houston to get my Masters degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
Where I’ve taught
I have taught all over Houston at public junior high and high schools in Cy-Fair, Houston, Pearland, and Sugarland ISD’s, as well as at Vivaldi Music Academy, Houston Community College, and as a coach for the Houston Youth Symphony. I have taught for Floot Fire Houston, for The Informed Flutist, Aralee Dorough’s flute intensive at the University of Houston, and at the Fine Arts Summer Academy in Nashville, TN. I was also the non-major flute teacher while a graduate student at Rice University.

Students of mine can be found studying music all over Texas and beyond, including flute majors at the University of Houston, the University of North Texas, Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M, as well as at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.
